How To Prepare for Winter in Southern California

While Southern California doesn’t experience winter weather like many other parts of the country, we do still have to account for a shift in the weather we do encounter. It does get darker earlier and we have less sunlight in general, even if it’s still better than many other places. We may not need snow tires, but there’s still plenty we can do to stay safe this winter.

Tires: We tend to see more rainy conditions in the winter. Now is a great time to assess the current state of your tires. You’ll want proper tread to ensure that they can handle the extra water on the roadways. Also check them for tire pressure and general wear. Take a moment to even check for any possible punctures. Some punctures can result in slow leaks. If you are planning on heading up to a snowy/icy area, make sure your tires are in great condition and have chains at the ready.

Windshield wiper blades: Take a look at yours. From behind the wheel, you’re looking to see if they simply smear the water around, completely clear the windshield, or something in between. If it’s anything other than completely clear, it’s time to replace them. No one wants to get stuck in a downpour and not be able to see.

Brakes: Make sure you can stop on a dime. You don’t want faulty brakes at any time of the year, but when you throw in wet weather conditions, it’s even more important that yours are working at their best.

Lights: Check all of your lights inside and out. Make sure to check out the lenses too. They tend to discolor over time and use and can interfere with your ability to see as far as you need to in the rain, fog, or dark. Headlight restoration is a real thing!

Emergency kit: Make sure yours is up to date with a warm blanket, snacks, water, current medications, jumper cables, flashlight with extra batteries, first aid kit, tool kit, and safety flares.
